As you will see on Sunday night, when we upload our
pictures, Neal and Alon not only made it to the grandstand, but we had
the best seats in the entire house. Alon stood up on a chair during
the final stretch of the Preakness Stakes, restricting Neal's view,
but he managed to get a great video photo finish. Unfortunately, this
led to a disappointing view of Curlin's winning over Street Sense by a
nose. We managed to sneak into this section, and the staff ended up
being especially lax today. We walked right into the grandstand,
right into the finish line section, and right up to the fence of the
track. The rain held out for most of the day, and was only drizzling
by the time the race got underway. We woke up
early, and got an 8:27 AM start down to Baltimore, hitting little
traffic along the way. Once we got to the Pimlico area, we decided to
try our luck with the local parking vendors. This proved to be an
interesting experience, as one of the guys jumped in the car, and
directed us down a few one way streets, the wrong way, to the nearest
lawn to park on. Then, we were approached by a lady who actually
owned this lawn, and requested that we paid her, or threatened to tow
us. After a bunch of arguing, we eventually gave the original guy $5,
and the lady $25... we were just glad to be parked, and were ready for
the festivities.
The line to get in wasn't as long as usual. Once
in the infield, Alon's cousin Zack Schildhorn found us, and we
journeyed through mayhem, walking over people, coolers, empty beer
cans, etc. to find the area that Alon's fraternity brothers were
parked at. We were greeted by a bunch of the brothers, and were happy
to finally be settled in. After this... Neal and Alon walked around,
placed some bets, and just experienced the craziness of the Preakness
Stakes infield with 121,263 fans... a record. Neal bumped into his
friend Jordanna, who happened to be best friends with a girl Alon used
to go to camp with, Dana. It was quite a coincidence, and a lot of
fun!
After the race, which was described above, we took a
quick stop at Kennedy's Fried Chicken, before driving down to DC. Our
good friend Ajay, who we have known for a long time, greeted us at his
medical school residence, in the GW area of town. We went to a
restaurant named Lauriol Plaza, the best Mexican restaurant in DC,
according to Ajay. We each had a straberry/lemon frozen "margarita
swirl" and Alon bumped into, randomly, some friends from a long time
ago [including Nina, who is a dedicated mlbraodtrip2007.com website
reader!].
It was a tiring day, and we just took it easy the
rest of the night. We explored Georgetown and foggy bottom with Ajay,
played some Wii at his friend's apartment, got dominos, and went to
bed. Neal fell asleep in about... 5 seconds. See you tomorrow at RFK
stadium!
