After checking out of a small motel on the Kentucky
side of Cincinnati, we were glad to be headed towards Louisville.
We arrived at the Slugger factory at around 11 AM, and immediately
bought tickets for a tour. After seeing a short video, we were
guided through the factory where they actually make all of the bats
used in professional baseball. We even got to keep some wood
scraps! The bat making process was interesting; they even have a
computer connected to a wood carving machine that had about 2,000
different bat templates [for every player] programmed in. The
museum there is also really cool. We saw famous bats used in
games, some of the first bats ever made, and even a bat Ruth used to
keep track of his own home runs during a season.
After leaving the Slugger factory, we got some pizza in
Louisville, and were told it was the "best pizza in America, including
NY and Boston." The pizza was good. After that, we drove
to Churchill downs, and were able to catch 5 races. The track
itself is beautiful as well as historic. We saw plaques
dedicated to famous Derby winners, statues, and of course the
beautiful Twin Spires. It was a hot day, but we managed to sit
out in the sun for all of the races, right by the finish line!
After driving back to Cincinnati, we parked and
headed straight to Great American Ballpark for the Reds game.
The park is built right on the Ohio River, and has some nice features:
a party deck resembling a river boat, a split upper deck, a mist
dispenser for hot fans, and a fancy Griffey Jr. home run counter.
The game included 6 home runs, and an extra innings finish. The
Reds lost control of the game late, and fell apart in the 11th, when
they gave up two runs to a power hitting Indians team. We had
great seats, and Alon even got a ball in the end of the game! We
are currently somewhere in the middle of Indiana, driving towards St.
Louis for tomorrow's afternoon game against the LA Angels. See
you there! |
