After we woke up, Zack took us to a local breakfast
place. Then, he showed us around the campus of U of Oregon a bit
before we said goodbye to him. Alon bought a "joke book" from
"Frog," a local homeless by choice man. He was pretty hilarious.
We drove straight to Crater Lake after this, in the southern part of
Oregon. Crater Lake was formed about 7,000
years ago after a volcano lost its lava in a huge eruption and then
basically imploded on itself. We arrived at Crater Lake at an
amazing overlook, and were taken back by the blueness of the water.
The crater filled in with rain water and snow melt, and has basically
been untouched by nature ever since, which helps explain the
incredible dark blue color of the water. We saw "Wizard Island,"
which is an active volcano cone that grew up out of the crater.
After taking in a few more angles of the lake, we
stopped at the Crater Lake lodge for some relaxation and french onion
soup. Then, we drove south to a wildflower trail, and hiked a
bit in the woods. After leaving the small but amazing park, we
made our way down to the northwestern part of California, to Redwood
National Park. Driving in the night during a rainstorm, we could
only make out the silhouettes of the gigantic redwoods... we would
learn just how big they were the next day, see you then! |
