Today, we woke up in our motel outside of Banff
National Park and headed towards the gate. Immediately, the
Canadian Rockies surrounded us on all sides, and the crisp blue lakes
came into view. The Canadian Rockies national park system is
serviced by a long highway that runs from Banff to Jasper. Along
the way, many incredible outlooks and trails can be accessed. We
headed straight to Lake Louise, a gorgeous resort town on a lake,
within the Valley of Ten Peaks, and on one of the bluest lakes you
will ever see.
We walked around the lake and saw a sign for a trail
to "Mirror Lake." This 2.6 km trail was all uphill, but it
included an amazing overhead view of Lake Louise along the way.
The Mirror Lake was a very small lake that did, at times, reflect the
snow and mountain resting behind the water. The way back down
was a lot faster, as it was all downhill. After the trail, we
checked out the luxurious Chateau on Lake Louise, and then headed off
to the village for a quick lunch.
After lunch, we went to Moraine Lake. This
lake, unbelievably, is even more stunning than Lake Louise, with its
perfect blue water, huge rock pile overlooking the lake, forests
lining the shore, and of course numerous snow capped mountain peaks
reflecting off of the water. Alon climbed over floating logs
made by beavers in order to climb up the side of the rock mountain,
and only then realized there was a trail to accomplish the same goal.
Neal joined Alon on the top, and we took some amazing pictures of the
lake.
As it was getting lake, we headed off to Lake Louise
to test out our kayaks on Canadian water. This will probably be
the best kayaking experience we will ever have. The water was
still, and our surroundings had unmatched beauty. After taking
some pictures, we loaded up the car again, and headed off to Johnston
Canyon, for some final views of the Park. Before getting to the
Canyon, Alon spotted a wolf in a distant field. We got out of
the car and video taped the wolf howling in the distance. After
walking to the powerful surging lower falls of the canyon, we headed
back to the car for some dinner in Banff. Along the way, a black
bear crossed the road in front of us, and we followed an Elk bull who
was eating on the side of the road.
We slept in a motel in Calgary, since Neal is
heading back home for the weekend, for his brother Michael's
graduation. Congrats, Miguel! So, here I am, writing this
entry in a Starbucks in Calgary... on my way to the Canadian Icefields.
Sorry for the delay in updates! See you tomorrow in Jasper! |
