Today, we woke up in our tent and realized we were in
the middle of a beautiful mountain range overlooking a lake. The
Polson campground was the best we stayed at yet, and we slept very
well. When checking out, we learned that the main road in
Glacier National Park, the "Going To The Sun" road, was closed for
major construction. Avalanches had destroyed some bridges and
roads this winter, and the park was still being reconstructed.
This changed our plan, as we drove about 3 hours to the east side of
the park.
We stopped for lunch at East Glacier, Montana,
before heading to the St. Mary entrance of Glacier National Park.
This entrance is adjacent to an emerald green colored lake, St. Mary,
with sharp snow covered peaks rising above the colored wild flower
fields. We drove along the east side of the Going To The Sun
Road, towards the dock for a 1.5 hour boat tour of the lake. We
saw one of the 27 remaining glaciers in the park on the Going To The
Sun mountain, after passing Goose Island, a tiny but mysterious and
famous island in the middle of a 300 foot deep lake [no one knows how
it got in the middle of the glacier formed lake]. After seeing some of
the most beautiful mountains of our trip, the boat headed to another
dock with a small path to a nice waterfall. We also saw a deer
eating in the woods there!
After returning to shore, we drove about 6 more
miles to the end of the available road and saw the huge Jackson
Glacier. On the way back, we saw a coyote that ran beside
our car for a good 5 minutes. It was really cool, and we got
some great pictures. Then, we headed off to the Many Glaciers
road, which has a beautiful chateau on a lake at the end of it.
The area was magnificent, but we decided that we're content with
campgrounds! In fact, after being stopped at the Canadian border
for about an hour [they are really thorough here], we drove in the
night towards Banff through Calgary, seeking to find a campground...
see you tomorrow in the Canadian Rockies! |
