We woke up today to the sight of a scorpion running
across our cabin floor, the sounds of gunshot fire in the near
distance and a story of a roadrunner sighting by a lady who worked at
the campground. Needless to say, New Mexico would be an
interesting place to spend the day. We headed out after
breakfast to Carlsbad Caverns, a massive cave system located in the
southeastern portion of New Mexico. We made it literally 1
minute before the last tour of the day departed, which was at 3 pm!
Carsbad Caverns, our third cave visit of the trip,
was absolutely a landslide victory as far as caves go. This cave
was enormous. The "big room" was literally miles long and at
some points, over 100 feet high. The thousands upon thousands of
stalagmites and stalactites, soda straws, draperies, columns, and more
truly deserved to be located in rooms such as the "Kings Palace".
Our tour guide was a great story teller. At one point, she
turned off the lights and asked the group to be silent. We all
sat, waiting for our eyes to adjust, in eerie silence. But, it
gave us a sense of the fear experienced by the first explorer who went
through when he dropped his lantern. Only, he was by himself.
After our guided tour, we took close to an hour long
walk around the "big room". We then took the elevator back to
ground level and headed towards Roswell, New Mexico in search of alien
life. We found many aliens, not of which were real of course.
The whole town is adorned with alien puppets, dolls, murals, and even
the lampposts are alien shaped. We ate in a hilarious restaurant
which was themed around alien sightings and weather balloon
conspiracies. After dinner, we drove to Lubbock, Texas where we
would stay in a KOA campground. |
