Today we woke up and started on our 3 hour journey to
eastern Utah, towards Canyonlands and Arches National Park. We
arrived at Canyonlands and went to the visitors center to fill up our
water. After this, we went on to view the various overlooks.
Canyonlands overlooks massive and deep canyons that were carved out in
a beautiful desert environment. We managed to see mostly all of
Canyonlands and still have time for a full tour of Arches.
Arches, which is about 50 miles away from Canyonlands,
has a drastically different landscape. This landscape provides
views of many tall, thin rock structures, balancing rocks, and of
course numerous and gigantic arches. It is hard to imagine just
how large these structures are without visiting here. We zipped
around the park, making sure to see every site possible and still make
it to the Delicate Arch hiking trail before sunset.
On the Delicate Arch trail, we saw ancient rock
carvings before heading to the arch. Walking in the late
afternoon, we were spared by the extreme heat, but it was nonetheless
a pretty strenuous hike uphill to the arch. We first got a great
view of the arch through a rock window that was across the canyon.
Making our final approach around a narrow cliff, Alon remembered his
Dad's story of when he got caught on that cliff during a torrential
thunderstorm which included constant lightning, rain and rocks falling
over his head. Luckily, we had a clear day and arrived just in
time to see the light bend in spectacular ways around the arch.
Banking on this to be a photographic wonder, Alon
was thrilled to make it for the sunset, and thinks that his panoramic
shot above is one of the best photographs he has ever taken.
After admiring the arch, we made our way back down the trail and
headed to the car. We drove towards Cannonville, Utah, which is
just outside of Bryce Canyon National Park. See you there
tomorrow! |
