After waking up, we drove down to LA to meet Ty Nowell,
a guy we met who did the baseball road trip last year. Ty now
works for the Lakers as a website designer and also the season ticket
graphic designer. He showed us around the practice facility and
front offices, and we even got to shoot around on the court!
After this, he generously treated us to lunch at a great burger place
in Manhattan Beach!
After saying goodbye, we headed to USC, which is
where we would stay for the next 3 nights. We stopped by the
football stadium, which was built for the 1928 Summer Olympics, and
also to the new Galen Arena. After this, it was time to go
through LA traffic and towards Anaheim for the Angels game.
The stadium is on the older side, but massive
renovations have kept it nice and modern looking. The outside is
especially cool, as they have a full size field in the brick and the
names of every player ever to start at each respective position on
that season's opening day. Also, two huge helmets and bats flank
the home plate gate. The inside was pretty standard, but one
defining feature is the rock garden and fountain in center field.
The Angels took on the Texas Rangers. The two
pitchers, Kelvim Escobar and Kevin Millwood kept the hitters in check
for practically the whole game. Going into the bottom of the
9th, the game was tied 1 to 1. After a Gary Matthews Jr. double
and a sacrifice that advanced him to third, Casey Kotchman stepped up
with a game winning single to right field. The crowd went nuts,
and then all stayed for a special Friday night fireworks show to the
theme of California songs. See you tomorrow on the beach! |
